Pretty as a picture

Thank you, dears, for sending the girls to the crèche today with their favourite outfits for the class photo … Wait till you see it! I’m sure you’ll all be as happy to hang it on your walls as I am on mine.

Christmas with Mr Darcy was resplendent as usual in her lovely apple green silk brocade dress. Victoria, please do let me know if you’d like me to work on shoe-tying with her. Her tiny dancing slippers don't give her much opportunity to practice.

There was a theme today in the girls' outfits, as I suspected there might be this close to Christmas. With Love at Christmas and Santa Maybe donned their finest elfin fairy costumes. With Love jingled the bells on her toes all morning. All. Morning. Long. There was a little upset when Santa caught her gossamer wing on the loo door, but A Merry Little Christmas sewed it right up and soon had her smiling again.

I was a bit surprised to see Winter Wonderland's choice. Or, to be accurate, I was surprised not to see her, hidden as she was under all that fur. Belinda, dear, where did you find such a realistic husky costume? She could not have been happier, and she’s such a little sharer that she offered to let the other girls try it out. The others politely declined (head to toe husky isn’t a look that everyone wants to try), but she wasn’t at all offended.

Meet Me Under the Mistletoe was clearly the most fashionable tot, at least in terms of 21st century style ... which didn't involve fur or fairy garb. I didn’t realise that Missoni made baby clothes. The Twelve Days to Christmas got a tad bit jealous, but we assured her that her Chinese silk kimono was just as pretty. Besides, as darling Darcy explained, “One man’s style must not be the rule of another’s” … Austin again, we think. Anyway, Twelve Days appreciated the sentiment.

When I Fall In Love was ever-so proud of her choir robes and that gave Married by Christmas the idea to organise everyone into a sing-along. Mistletoe in Manhattan assured us she knew all the words thanks to her big sister. They sang for me just after lunchtime. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Joy to the word, the Lord is fun,
Leather settees are king
Let every heart prepare the room
Let Kevin and Aunt Shirl sing
Let Kevin and Aunt Shirl sing
Let Ke-eh-eh-vin and Aunt Shirl sing

It got rather confusing from there… Talli, dear, you may want to set the record straight. On the other hand, Aunt Shirl might enjoy the song as it is.

Sincerely,
Miss Dewey

  1. Trust Mistletoe in Manhattan to get the words wrong! What can I say, she loves leather settees! How can you not?

Don't even get me started on my own class photos. Definitely cringe-worthy.

  2. Jeez, me too ... I have a very clear vision of my all-time favourite outfit, which I got to wear for one photo - red jeans and a white sweater with a pink and red pattern around the neck (does anybody know what those were called?). Of course, this was the '80s so I also wore a turtleneck with little red hearts UNDERNEATH a white polo shirt (collar turned up of course) ... and Capezio jazz shoes. Oh I Was A Stunner!

'fess up, Talli - favourite terrible school photo outfit??

  3. Oh I wish I had this School Photo pic - my mum has brushed my hair to a sheen, white shirt pristine etc I stepped from the car and into the path on an oncoming bicycle, knocked to ground, smooshed up left side of face so had to have a PROFILE pic done showing only right side!

  4. Somebody somewhere has a school photo of me the day after I cut my own fringe with some play scissors. I was about five and I'd just given my Sindy doll a hair cut and thought I'd join her. Oooops!

    1. Ooh I bet you were Pretty :-)) I once cut off my own ponytails after giving my blanket a haircut. I clearly remember carefully cutting the little hairs on the blanket - it was mohair. Mom says I butchered it. And my own hair, obviously.

  5. Oh no, Belinda! ... actually, didn't you recently have a mishap involving your nose and your car door? Winter Wonderland may not be the only clumsy girl around here...

    1. I did! Slammed down the back hatch of car on my head and took out a chunk on bridge of my nose! That bit is still a different pink to rest of my face. Didn't even hurt that much - cursed, hopped in driver's seat and then realised I was bleeding! I've got a clumsy dog and husband too.

  6. AMLC is so much more of a craftsgirl then her mother! Sooo proud.

I only ever had one school photo taken (It was the 70s. There were lots of us. We were poor.)- with my twin sister & two younger brothers. Younger bros look suitably angelic, Twin and I had both just got National Health specs, and look suitably geeky & scruffy. She has the evidence and may use it against me.

  7. What colour were the NH specs - I didn't have any but remember friends with like a clear pale blue and pink!

  8. I had blue and my twin had pink! Very fetching:-)

My mother did take a picture of us with our four older siblings the day we started school. Which is better, but probably because it's fuzzy & black and white. Can still remember it being taken, because I was so proud of my new uniform. Two days letter, I fell in the bath wearing it, and wasn't quite so proud:-)

    1. Ah yes, matching outfits for twins, always a winner! I seem to remember having an identical outfit as my sister (3.5 years younger). Obviously a popular theme no matter what country you're raised in :-)

    1. Thanks Tonya, I'm so glad you've got your reading sorted for the holidays :-) Do YOU have a favourite horrible outfit from childhood too?
